Battery Resources: Practical Guides for Battery Buyers and Importers
This page collects every guide we publish for people who buy batteries, cells and electric vehicles from China. They are written from the factory side of the conversation: what we are asked, what goes wrong, and what a buyer can check before money moves. Nothing here is gated.
Start with the group that matches where you are in the process. If you are still choosing a supplier, read group one before you compare quotations — most of the expensive mistakes happen at that stage, not during production.
1. Choosing a supplier and qualifying the factory
Use these before you send an enquiry, and again before you place the first order.
- How to Choose a Lithium Battery Supplier in China — The screening sequence we would use ourselves: what to ask before price, and how to tell a factory from a trader.
- How to Audit a Chinese Battery Factory — The documents to request first, eight things to check on the floor, and the red flags that end the conversation.
- Battery Pack Specification Sheet: How to Read One — What each line actually means, why 48 V can be 15 or 16 cells in series, and seven red flags in a datasheet.
- Battery Sample Approval and Incoming Inspection — How to lock the specification before sampling, what to measure on arrival, and how to sample a production batch.
2. Cells, chemistry and pack electronics
The technical reading you need to compare two quotations that look identical on paper.
- Lithium Cell Specifications Explained — Capacity, internal resistance, discharge rate and cycle life written for buyers who are not electrochemists.
- LFP vs NMC vs Sodium-ion: Chemistry Comparison — Energy density, cycle life, cold behaviour and cost per usable kilowatt-hour, and which duty cycle suits each.
- Lithium Cell Capacity Grading Report: How to Read One — Capacity, internal resistance, self-discharge and batch spread, plus the acceptance clauses to put in your PO.
- BMS Specifications Explained — Continuous versus peak current, balancing, protection thresholds and standby drain, and the numbers suppliers inflate.
3. Sizing and specifying the pack
Turning a duty cycle into a specification the factory can build and you can verify.
- How to Size a Battery Pack — Turn runtime or range into watt-hours, pick a voltage class, convert to amp-hours and add margin for cold and ageing.
- 48 V vs 72 V: How to Choose the Right Voltage — What changes with voltage: current, wiring, controller cost and efficiency, and where each class makes sense.
- Lead-Acid to Lithium Conversion: What the Payback Really Looks Like — The cost items buyers forget when they compare per-cycle price, and when a conversion does not pay back.
4. Export, shipping and market compliance
Documents, packing, marking and the end-of-life obligations that follow the goods.
- Lithium Battery Export Documents: A Complete Checklist — Every document an importer needs from UN 38.3 to the commercial invoice, and who is supposed to issue each one.
- Lithium Battery Export Essentials: UN 38.3 + MSDS + Sea Transport — What the test summary must contain, why the MSDS alone is not enough, and how sea and air rules diverge.
- Lithium Battery Packaging and Marking for Export — UN specification boxes, the lithium battery mark, state of charge limits and a pre-shipment check list.
- Lithium Battery Recycling and End-of-Life Compliance — Who carries the obligation when you import, the EU regulation timeline, and shipping batteries for recycling.
- EU Battery Regulation 2026: Exporter Compliance Guide — What the European rules require from a non-EU manufacturer, and what you should ask for at quotation stage.
5. Safety, storage and handling
What to do with the batteries once they are in your building.
- Lithium Battery Storage and Charging Safety — Warehouse zones, storage state of charge, fire response, damaged packs and stock rotation for importers.
- Energy Storage Incident Review 2024-2026 — Eleven documented cases and what each one changed in the standards, written as engineering lessons not headlines.
6. Market data, prices and policy
Context for timing a purchase and understanding a quotation that moved.
- China Lithium Battery Export Data H1 2026 — Where the volume went, which categories grew, and what the structural shift means for lead times.
- Lithium Price Trend Forecast H2 2026 — How raw material moves transmit into cell quotes, and how to time a purchase without guessing the bottom.
- LFP Storage Cell Price Rebound: What Buyers Should Do — Why prices turned, how long allocation lasts, and the contract terms that protect you when supply tightens.
- Global Energy Storage Battery Shipment Ranking H1 2026 — Who shipped what, and how to read a ranking when you are trying to judge a supply partner.
- Battery Consumption Tax: Cascading Impacts on Trade — How the tax reaches exporters and importers, and the contract wording that decides who absorbs it.
- Overseas Energy Storage Subsidy Comparison 2026 — US, EU, Saudi and Japan incentives side by side, and what each one requires from the equipment itself.
7. Technology watch
What is actually shipping, and what is still a press release.
- Sodium-Ion Battery Mass Production Year 2026 — Where sodium-ion actually competes today, and what its cold behaviour and cycle life look like in practice.
- Solid-State Battery Commercialization Progress 2026 — Semi-solid versus true solid state, what is shipping now, and what is still a laboratory claim.
- Lithium Battery Recycling Policy 2026 Update — What changed in the first month of the new rules, and the practical steps importers had to take.
How to use these guides
The check lists are meant to be used as working documents. Copy the questions into your enquiry template so every supplier answers the same set, then compare. A supplier who answers precisely is worth more than one who answers quickly.
Where a guide mentions a number — a cycle count, a capacity threshold, a packing limit — it also states the conditions that number depends on. If a quotation gives you the number without the conditions, ask for the conditions before you rely on it.
Two pages on this site are not guides but answers you will need alongside them: what our warranty covers and how to claim, and how we ship lithium batteries.
Frequently asked questions
Are these guides free to use?
Yes. There is no registration and nothing is behind a form. Use them internally, share them with your team, and quote them to other suppliers if it helps you ask better questions.
Are they independent, or are they sales material?
They are written by the people who answer our technical enquiries, so they reflect how we work. Where a rule, a test method or a market figure is involved we cite the condition it depends on rather than presenting the version that flatters us. Where we cannot do something — a carbon footprint declaration in auditable form, for example — the guides say so.
How often are they updated?
Compliance and market guides are reviewed when the underlying rule or data changes, and the revision is noted on the page. Technical guides are updated when we see a new failure mode or a new specification question repeated by buyers. If you spot something out of date, tell us.
Where should a first-time importer start?
Read the supplier screening guide, then the specification sheet guide, then the export document check list. That sequence covers the three places where a first order usually goes wrong: choosing the counterparty, agreeing what is being built, and getting the paperwork through customs.
Can you send the check lists in a form I can use with my team?
Yes. Send us the list you want on WhatsApp and we will return it as a document you can paste into your own template. We can also complete it for your specific order, with the values for the pack or vehicle you are buying.
Do these guides replace legal or engineering advice?
No. They describe how the processes work in practice so that you can ask the right questions and read the answers critically. For a binding interpretation of a regulation in your market, use a qualified adviser; for a safety-critical design decision, use your own engineering sign-off.
Ask a question that is not covered here
If the answer you need is not on this page, it probably belongs on it. Tell us what you are buying and what you could not find, and we will answer directly — and if the question comes up more than once, we will write it up. Start on WhatsApp, or go to our LiFePO4 packs, the OEM process, cell wholesale, e-bike battery packs, motorcycle battery packs, electric two-wheelers, cargo tricycles or golf cart batteries.
