Electric Cargo Tricycles: 72V 100Ah, 1000 kg Payload

An electric cargo tricycle earns its keep by moving loads that a motorcycle cannot and going places a van cannot: wholesale markets, farm tracks, gated communities, factory yards and narrow city streets. Ours is built for that duty rather than for passenger comfort – a 2000W drive, a 72V 100Ah lithium battery and a 1000 kg rated payload.

This page covers what to specify before ordering, how to size the battery against a working day, and where lithium beats lead-acid on a cargo platform.

Key takeaways

  • The build is a 2,000 W drive, a 72V 100Ah lithium battery of about 7.2 kWh, and a 1,000 kg rated payload on a 1,600 x 1,100 mm cargo bed sized for standard pallets and crates.
  • Size the battery against a shift, not against a number: estimate daily distance, measure real consumption per kilometre for a week, add 25-30% headroom so the pack is not routinely discharged to cut-off, and check the charging window.
  • Two shifts a day need either a second pack or an opportunity-charge break, and that has to be built into the pack and charger specification rather than discovered after delivery.
  • Lithium beats lead-acid on a cargo platform on usable energy, weight against a 1,000 kg payload, cycle life in the low thousands against a few hundred, and zero watering or equalisation maintenance.
  • Supplied as SKD kits with batteries travelling as class 9 under UN38.3, MSDS, CE and IEC 62133; cover starts on the earlier of six months after production or the arrival date.

The build: what you get

  • 2000W motor – enough torque to move a full load away from a standstill on a slope without slipping the clutch or cooking the controller.
  • 72V 100Ah lithium battery – about 7.2 kWh, the largest energy store in our vehicle range.
  • 1000 kg maximum load on a 1600 x 1100 mm cargo bed – sized for standard pallets and crates.
  • 4.00-12 / 4.50-12 tyres and drum brakes – commercial, cheap to replace and easy to service in any tyre shop.
  • Supplied as SKD kits for container shipment, with battery capacity, cargo-box configuration and OEM options customised to order.

Sizing the battery against a working day

A 72V 100Ah pack stores roughly 7.2 kWh. What matters is not the number but whether it covers a shift with margin for hills, load and cold mornings. Work it out as follows:

  • Estimate daily distance in kilometres.
  • Allow realistic consumption per kilometre for a loaded cargo tricycle – load, terrain and stop-start riding move this figure a lot, so measure one week before you buy a fleet.
  • Add 25-30% headroom so the pack is not routinely discharged to its cut-off; shallow discharge is what gives a lithium pack its cycle life.
  • Check the charging window. If vehicles return to a depot overnight, overnight charging is enough; if they run two shifts, you either need a second pack or an opportunity-charge break, and that has to be built into the pack and charger specification.

If your duty cycle turns out to be lighter than that, a smaller pack is cheaper to buy and lighter to ship. If it is heavier, we can increase capacity or specify a second swappable pack. See our battery pack range and battery pack manufacturing for what can be built.

Lithium or lead-acid on a cargo platform

  • Usable energy. A lead-acid bank should not be discharged much below half its rating if you want it to last, so much of the nameplate capacity is unusable. A lithium pack can be discharged far deeper, so a smaller rated pack often does the same work.
  • Weight. Lead-acid adds mass that counts directly against payload on a vehicle rated for 1000 kg.
  • Cycle life. Lithium packs are typically rated in the low thousands of cycles against a few hundred for traction lead-acid, which is what decides the replacement bill on a fleet that works every day.
  • Maintenance. Lead-acid needs watering, terminal cleaning and equalisation charges; a sealed lithium pack with a BMS does not.
  • Upfront cost. Lead-acid still wins on purchase price. It usually loses on cost per working year once replacements, downtime and payload are counted.

Our conversion payback analysis shows how the numbers work out on commercial fleets, including the point where lithium overtakes lead-acid.

Typical duty cycles

  • Market and wholesale delivery – repeated short trips with heavy loads; payload and low-speed torque matter more than top speed.
  • Farm and estate work – feed, produce and tools on unpaved ground; tyre size, ground clearance and drum brakes that shrug off dust.
  • Municipal and sanitation work – predictable routes and fixed shifts, which makes battery sizing straightforward and favours lithium on cycle life.
  • Factory and port yards – internal logistics where a tricycle replaces a forklift for light, frequent moves.

Export, packing and after-sales

  • SKD kits for container shipment, with battery capacity and cargo-box configuration customised to order.
  • Batteries travel as class 9 dangerous goods with UN38.3 test summary, MSDS, CE and IEC 62133 documentation – see battery shipping compliance.
  • Spares we recommend stocking: brake shoes, tyres and tubes, controller, charger, bearings and lighting.
  • Replacement packs matched to the original specification, so a swap does not require re-wiring the vehicle.

Cover starts on the earlier of six months after production or the arrival date, which matters when sea freight takes a month or more. The full terms, including what voids cover, are on our battery warranty page.

After-sales now includes disposal. Ask who registers as the producer in your market and who pays to treat a failed pack — end-of-life compliance covers the questions to put in the purchase order.

Frequently asked questions

How far will a 72V 100Ah tricycle go?

It depends on load, terrain and how much stop-start riding there is. A useful method is to measure consumption over one working week on a single vehicle, then size the fleet with 25-30% headroom rather than guessing from the specification sheet.

Can the cargo box be changed?

Yes – cargo-box configuration is one of the options we customise to order, along with battery capacity. Send the dimensions or the load you need to carry.

Lithium or lead-acid for a cargo fleet?

Lithium, in most working fleets. The purchase price is higher but usable capacity is greater, the pack is lighter against a payload limit, cycle life is several times longer and there is no routine maintenance.

Do you ship batteries separately?

Yes. Batteries shipped alone are declared UN3480 and shipped with their own documentation, which is often the simplest way to clear customs for a vehicle order.

What is the minimum order quantity?

3 units for samples and prototype builds, with a sample taking about two weeks from a confirmed specification. See the OEM process.
