Electric Motorcycle Battery Packs: 60V to 74V

Motorcycles ask more of a battery than an e-bike does: higher continuous current, harder acceleration, longer sustained loads and often CAN communication with the controller. DIDIDEDE builds electric motorcycle battery packs for exactly that duty, from 48V light motorcycles up to a 74.6V 11.1 kWh NMC pack.

Key takeaways

  • Motorcycle packs are specified by current, not capacity: a pack that cannot deliver the controller’s peak current will sag and cut out on acceleration whatever its amp-hour rating.
  • Voltage classes: 48V for light motorcycles and high-capacity city machines, 60V for mid-power motorcycles and scooters, 72V/74V for performance machines where higher voltage keeps current and heat down.
  • Reference builds: 74V 31Ah (2,296 Wh, 75 A continuous and 100 A pulse, CAN), 48V 62Ah (2,966 Wh, 90 A and 135 A), 72V 30Ah LiFePO4 (60 A, discharges to -20 deg C), and the CATL 74.6V 148.5Ah NMC pack at 11.1 kWh.
  • Off-road duty is punished by vibration, dust, water and current spikes rather than by capacity, so those builds get reinforced housings, secure cell bracing, conservative BMS thresholds and higher ingress protection.
  • Match the charger to the chemistry – LiFePO4 and NMC do not share a charge profile; charge at 0.3-0.5C where the schedule allows, never charge below 0 deg C without a low-temperature function, and store at 50-60% state of charge.

Voltage classes, and why they matter

  • 48V – light motorcycles and mopeds, and high-capacity city machines. Our 48V 62Ah pack (2966 Wh) sits here.
  • 60V – the common choice for mid-power motorcycles and scooters. See 60V 30Ah and 60V 40Ah.
  • 72V / 74V – performance machines where higher voltage keeps current and heat down. See 72V 30Ah and 74V 31Ah.

Higher voltage is not automatically better – it has to match the controller and motor winding. The useful rule: for a given power, more voltage means less current, which means less heat in the pack, wiring and connectors.

The trade-offs are worked through in detail in our 48V vs 72V battery guide, including what each class means for controller and motor selection.

Packs we build for motorcycles and light motorcycles

Complete machines are listed under light electric motorcycles, electric motorcycles and electric dirt bikes.

Off-road and dirt bikes

Off-road use punishes packs differently: constant vibration, dust, water and hard current spikes on every jump and climb. For these builds we use reinforced housings, secure cell bracing, conservative BMS thresholds and higher ingress protection – see the EB-PRO off-road electric motorcycle as an example of the duty cycle we design for.

Continuous and peak current matter more than capacity

A pack that cannot deliver the controller’s peak current will sag and cut out on acceleration, whatever its amp-hour rating. When you send an enquiry, always include the motor’s rated and peak power. That number drives cell selection, busbar size and BMS settings more than anything else.

Those two numbers belong in the pack specification, not just the motor one. How to read BMS specifications explains what continuous and peak ratings mean, why peak current without a duration is meaningless, and how to set the trip values.

Peak current means nothing without a duration, and the same is true of every other headline figure. See what to look for on a specification sheet before you compare two offers on price.

Thermal and mechanical design

A motorcycle pack lives in a hotter, rougher place than an e-bike pack. What we design for:

  • Busbars sized for the peak current, not just the continuous rating, with weld and torque inspection on every joint
  • Cell bracing and potting so vibration does not work connections loose
  • Thermal paths that move heat out of the cell stack, plus BMS temperature sensors at cell and pack level
  • Enclosure ingress protection appropriate to the machine – higher for off-road and all-weather use
  • Mounting points that tie into the frame rather than hanging off the loom

Charging and storage

  • Match the charger to the chemistry – LiFePO4 and NMC do not share a charge profile.
  • Fast charging shortens cycle life; if the schedule allows it, charge at 0.3-0.5C.
  • Do not charge below 0 deg C unless the pack has a low-temperature charge function.
  • Store at 50-60% state of charge if a machine is going to sit for months.

If you are holding packs in a warehouse rather than a garage, the rules scale up: see lithium battery storage and charging safety for zones, storage state of charge, racking, fire response and how to quarantine damaged units.

Certification and shipping

  • UN38.3 test summary and MSDS for transport
  • CE declaration and IEC 62133 for cells and packs
  • GB 43854-2024 and 3C on our light-motorcycle packs
  • Class 9 dangerous goods (UN3480 / UN3481), shipped by sea, air or rail

Custom builds and wholesale

Tell us the voltage, capacity, peak current, dimensions and communication protocol and we will propose a configuration. Minimum order quantity is 3 units for prototypes and samples, with samples in about two weeks – see the custom battery pack OEM process, our battery pack manufacturing capability and our lithium cells wholesale supply.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace a lead-acid or NMC pack with LiFePO4?

Often yes, but check three things: the charger voltage profile, the controller’s low-voltage cut-off, and the physical space. LiFePO4 has a different charge voltage and a flatter discharge curve.

How much range will I get?

Divide the pack’s watt-hours by your consumption. A 2296 Wh pack at a realistic 30-40 Wh per km gives roughly 60-75 km; riding style, speed and terrain move that figure a lot.

Do your packs support CAN communication?

Yes – our 74V 31Ah and 48V 62Ah light-motorcycle packs support CAN. UART, RS485 and open-loop configurations are available on custom builds.

Can you build a pack to fit my frame?

Yes. Send the available envelope and mounting points and we will design the housing and busbars around it, from 3 units upwards.

What is the lead time?

Samples take about two weeks from a confirmed specification. Repeat production lead times are confirmed against cell availability when you order.
